A Stranger, by Pat St. Pierre

As I sit with cats in my drab apartment
I can see my sick wife’s face with deep circles under her eyes and a gaunt expression
staring at me. She looked as though she was trying to tell me
I appeared to her as a stranger not a long-time lover
who shared our bodies with one another but instead
someone she feared and didn’t know.
